Basic Dissertations Guidelines

Dissertations can be the most important academic paper students have ever written. As it marks transition from student to being scholar, one must never underestimate how difficult, time consuming, meticulous, and extensive writing dissertations are.

Students have to spend time scrupulously crafting their dissertations wherein it involves doing more research, hold more interviews, analyze more data than one has ever done in an entire scholastic life. However, there are some things that can make the process less burdensome. Here are some tips:

On Managing Topic

• Don’t change topic if unnecessary. Think about variables that can be cut down and how certain topic changes will affect the length, depth, breadth, and academic value of the study.

On Managing Advisor

• Talk to the advisor about the working setup during the dissertation process. Ask questions like the frequency of contact about the dissertation progress, deadlines for chapter drafts, and other relative concerns.

• Ask feedback that will be most helpful to the paper.

• Keep the advisor informed. Advisors are most helpful if they know the complete details of the dissertations such as the occurring problems, and the progress made. A weekly or monthly progress report is ideal.

On Managing Committee

• Ask the members of the committee about their preference: whether they want to see drafts of the chapters individually, or instead see the complete final draft.

• Keep in regular contact with the committee. Keep them aware that the study is in progress.

Writing dissertations can be mentally and psychologically exhausting, the good news is, it is also a fulfilling and rewarding showcase of academic capabilities.
